Components and legality
Room Spell candles are completely toxin free and are all produced to very high standards. We scrutinise every single unit that is made, to make sure we create great products, which adhere to local legislation, as well as also being compliant with national and international laws. We are fully CLP compliant and fully Proposition 65 compliant. Being environmentally friendly is also important to us. Wherever possible, we use reclaimed materials, repurposed materials and by-products that would normally go to landfill. As a company, we pride ourselves on our low carbon footprint and our transparency. With that in mind, below is a full breakdown of our candle components.
- Sasol container wax 6213 - We use mineral wax, which is provided to us by the German company; Sasol. They are market leaders of the candlewax world. The wax is infused with triglycerides and stabilisers, which eliminate toxins from the wax and prime it's molecules to accept high levels of scent. Sasol container wax 6213 is by far the best wax for scented candles, as it has superior scent throw and the capacity to absorb complicated scent loads.
- Tins made from reclaimed metals - a mixture of aluminium, tinplate and zinc. They are able to be recycled in accordance with local rules, when the candle comes to the end of it's life.
- Wedo eco 6 cotton candle wicks - these give a very clean burn and are extremely resilient.
- Cosmetic grade fragrance oils - provided to us by a number of different independent and sustainable fragrance oil companies. Cosmetic grade fragrance oils are mainly used in soaps and perfumes, but when used in scented candles, they give high levels of scent and produce absolutely no toxins. They are more expensive than plain scented oils, but we believe the extra cost is easily worth it. When using cosmetic grade fragrance oils, we only need to use 5% of fragrance, as cosmetic grade fragrance oils are very potent! Only 5% of fragrance oil being used, makes the chances of creating toxic compounds extremely low.
- SDS and CLP - All makers of scented candles should have SDS and CLP if they are creating their own fragrance oil blends. If you see a candle with no CLP (the sticker on the bottom which lists the ingredients) DO NOT buy it, as it could be toxic and hazardous to your health. Our SDS is worked out for us by MSDS Europe and we put together our own CLP, once the SDS has been received. If a candle comes back from testing as being toxic (sometimes it is unavoidable) the formula is re-worked and then re-tested, to ensure that no toxic elements are present within the blend. It is a legal requirement in England for candle makers to be SDS and CLP compliant.
- Proposition 65 - This is something that is not required by law in England, but we adhere to it anyway. This relates to letting customers know if our products contain any cancer causing toxins. Our products are free of such toxins, due to our careful creation process and the high quality components we use.
- Packaging - used for posting out candles, all of our cardboard boxes are made from recycled cardboard and can be easily recycled in accordance with local rules. We do not use any plastic components in any of our packaging.
- Isopropanol alcohol 99.9% proof. This is the same sort of alcohol that is used in hand sanitiser, which we use as a base for our spritzers and samples. The oil content is exactly the same as a candle; it is merely the delivery method that changes.
