The importance of home scenting
Hello. Black Phillip here. Once again, I am taking temporary control of my human vessel, to speak frankly and plainly about a particular subject. In this blog post (I am slowly getting used to using that word to describe a piece of writing on the internet) I will be speaking about the importance of home scenting and why I create it.
Scent plays a vital role in everyday life. It can evoke strong memories that could be pleasant or upsetting. Certain smells take people to a certain point in their life when they experience them. My human vessel cannot stand the scent of the alcoholic beverage; Southern Comfort. This is because he used to get blind pissed on it when he was a teenager, to the point of vomiting up a gooey black bile. Now, the scent of that particular alcoholic beverage immediately makes my human vessel feel the need to make a pavement pizza. The very first scent we created together, was York 1349. This was created from one of my vessel's memories. I simply guided his hands to show him the way. My vessel was unfortunate enough to discover a rotting corpse when he was 16, in the grounds of York Castle Museum. When discovered, the corpse was laid on it's back and was beginning to turn purple, where stale blood was congealing in it's defunct capillaries. My vessel poked it with a stick and the stick went in, through the softening, decomposing flesh. When the stick was removed, the odour that came out was absolutely overwhelming. My vessel didn't know it at the time, but this odour would stay with him forever. Once you have smelt a rotting corpse, it is impossible to forget the smell. It will be forever stored in your olfactory bank whether you like it or not. This is a demonstration of the absolute power that a strong scent can have, over the human condition.
There's an old saying; "An Englishman's home is his castle". I think this saying applies to every human on the planet (except those that prefer to live in the wild) and is genderless. It is normal for humans to want to make their place of living a relaxing space, which is also a reflection of their personalities. My products provide unusual home scenting, for anyone who desires it. What I create does often slip into cotemporary human homes, but most of the time, it is for those humans that are different. They desire something unusual. Sometimes, the unusual can be magnificent. This level of alternative excellence is what I strive for. I want to disrupt people's conceptions about what scented candles are and can be. Many alternative people out there in the world will be of the persuasion, that there are no scented candles available for their distinct and sharp personality. But slowly and steadily, I search for these people and when I find them, I change their minds and indeed their home.
Public perceptions about scented candles are at an all time low. At a market event, many hundreds of people can attend, but only a small portion of those will approach my stall. I think this is partly due to certain candle companies releasing inferior products, which has damaged the overall reputation of scented candles. One of my underlying aims is to change these views, by offering superior products, for a very competitive price. Changing these views is a very slow process, but it is something I continue to chip away at!
It's a beautiful thing to be able to provide. A scented candle is a luxury that most people can afford. For a small amount of money, my scented candles provide 42 hours of burn time, which is considerably more than most other scented candles out there. That's 42 hours of scenting, which adds a layer of character to whichever space it is burnt in. The right scent profile in the right setting, can give humans a level of relaxation and peace of mind, which they otherwise might not be able to achieve. Strong senses of safety, home and happiness are commonplace when my candles are being burnt. This is partly due to a transference of love. I put a lot of love and care into my products. Depending on what you believe, some of these positive feelings are surely passed on from the candle, into the room it is being burnt in. The quality of my work is evident - the candles burn all the way to the bottom, with no tunnelling and the scent is strong for the entire 42 hours of burn time. This gives a feeling of value for money to the customer, which adds to their positive feelings. Due to high standards, the customer can appreciate that I genuinely care about their experience with my product, and that I want that experience to be positive. Now, I'm not saying my products will definitely provide certain feelings for people, but they certainly encourage them to. I like to think I have something for everyone; floral tones, smoke tones, sweet tones, lighter tones, feminine tones, masculine tones, no family of scent is out of my reach - I will try absolutely anything in order to provide what the customer wants.
It all starts with an idea. This can be a story that needs to be told, or a scent that is particularly nice which needs a story added to it. Then, tireless research is performed, to establish what main scent notes I should attempt to include. Then comes the fun part; mixing oils together to find the perfect blend for the story I am trying to tell. Most of the time, I create scents that I would like to smell, or I create scent profiles for stories that I want to tell. But occasionally, a customer will make a suggestion, which I will take on board and develop into a physical product. Making a new scent profile still gives me a tingle of excitement. When a profile is completed, especially if it's been a long time in the making, the sense of achievement is immense. It is a affirming thought; imaginatively creating something that was not available before and didn't even exist, until I created it.
All of this is done, in order to offer an alternative to other scented products out there, which are of a high standard and are small pieces of luxury. I will not stop. I will keep challenging people's perceptions about the world of home scenting and it's importance.
This is Black Phillip, signing off and returning control to my human vessel.
